Association of Quaternary Researchers (AOQR)

The Association of Quaternary Researchers (AOQR) is an India-based, non-profit scientific society dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary research on the Quaternary Period—the most recent 2.6 million years of Earth’s history. AOQR promotes scientific excellence by fostering collaboration, facilitating knowledge exchange, strengthening research capacity, and enhancing the policy relevance of Quaternary science across disciplines such as geology, climate science, environmental studies, archaeology, and human–environment interactions.

As a national platform, AOQR brings together researchers, educators, institutions, and students engaged in Quaternary studies. The Association works to deepen understanding of past climate variability, landscape evolution, human adaptation, and environmental change—knowledge that is critical for interpreting present-day environmental challenges and informing sustainable futures.

AOQR was formally established and registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, on 12 December 2019. The Association is headquartered at the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP), Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Founded by a collective of leading scientists and researchers, AOQR was conceived to strengthen and accelerate Quaternary research across the Indian subcontinent. This region holds exceptional long-term records of environmental, climatic, and cultural change, making it central to global Quaternary science. AOQR actively bridges disciplines including geology, geomorphology, paleoecology, archaeology, paleoclimatology, and Earth system sciences to foster integrative research and holistic understanding.

  • Promote and enable high-quality research in Quaternary sciences

  • Foster interdisciplinary networks across academia, research institutions, and industry

  • Facilitate training programmes, workshops, and field-based learning initiatives

  • Advance outreach, education, and public understanding of Earth’s recent past

  • Strengthen science–policy linkages to support sustainable development
